Museveni slams Western countries over COVID-19 vaccine shortages

As the third wave of Coronavirus takes a toll in some African countries, people are getting more worried about their lives. This is because of the vaccine shortages in the continent which are partly attributed to richer countries’ refusal to aid by sending more vaccines to Africa.

On Wednesday richer members of the World Trade Organization (WTO) blocked a push by some 80 developing countries – led by India and South Africa – to waive its Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property (TRIPS) agreement rules on patents.

Countries such as USA and Britain insist that protecting intellectual property rights encourages research and innovation and that suspending those rights would not result into a sudden surge of vaccine supply.

The move saw African leaders demonstrate saying that their people’s lives are taken for granted. They explained that the move will lead Africa into poverty, unemployment and hunger.

However Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni says that the selfishness by richer countries will help Africa to stop depending on them.

During the World Health Summit hosted in the Pearl of Africa on Sunday 28th June, Museveni angrily noted that the vaccine shortages will wake African leaders to develop their own vaccines.

“This selfishness in the world is bad but it is good. I like it because it wakes up Africans. It’s a shame that the whole of the African continent is just asleep waiting to be saved by others. “If they don’t save us we shall die” like how it happened with slave trade. How can this be? Slave trade went on for 400 years, these idiot chiefs were just putting on monkey skins and so on looking like clowns.” He stated.
