Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni addressed the nation on the contentious issue of denial of bail to capital offenders, justifying his earlier statements that such suspects must never ever be granted bail. Now several opposition politicians and other political players have come out to react to his highly charged address.
Key among those is the Opposition National Unity Platform spokesperson Joel Ssenyonyi, who has accused the Ugandan leader of preaching water but drinking wine.
Museveni in his address declared that granting bail to such offenders is a provocation and disregard of the rights of the victims.
Museveni castigated politicians for defending criminals than the victims, saying capital offenders should be locked up until their cases are disposed of.
However, Joel Ssenyonyi didn’t take any of it, saying if Museveni cares much about Ugandans and their rights, he should start by finding the killers of the nation’s gruesome murders, as well as bringing to book the killers behind the Rwenzururu massacres.
“You say you care so much about victims of killings; how come we haven’t seen you pursue justice for Yasin Kawuma killed in Arua, those killed on Nov 18th&19th 2020, women&children killed by Gen Peter Elwelu in Kasese in 2016, Zebra &others killed by your trigger happy operatives???” Joel Ssenyonyi fired back on Twitter.
All this comes at the backdrop of the rearrest of two members of parliament, Hon Mohammed Ssegirinya and Allan Ssewanyana who are charged with murder, treason and terrorism charges originating from their alleged involvement in the Masaka machete murders
