Samia Suluhu To Be Sworn In As Tanzania’s First Female President

Following John Pombe Magufuli’s death, vice President Samia Suluhu Hassan will be sworn in as the first female president of Tanzania for the remainder of Magufuli’s term until 2025. 

Hassan, 61, is the second female president in East Africa after Sylivie Kinigi who ruled Burundi from 1993-94.

On Wednesday night, Hassan announced that President Magufuli had breathed his last at Mzena hospital in Dar El salaam. 

“Dear Tanzanians, it is sad to announce that today 17th March, 2021 around 6p.m we lost our brave leader, president John Magufuli who died from heart disease at Mzena hospital, Dar es Salaam where he was getting treatment” the designated president said on state broadcaster TCB. 

Reports about Magufuli’s health started speculating days ago after his main rival in the October election, Tindu Lissu alleged that he (Magufuli) had been admitted in Nairobi hospital and later Transferred to India while in comma after his health condition worsening due to COVID-19. 

The allegations were later trashed by the vice president who asked Tanzanians not to listen to romours saying that it was normal for the president to be checked for flue or fever. 

Magufuli shall be remembered to be the only president who resisted the COVID-19 lockdown wave. He said his people would survive on prayers.
