Gov't suspends Bilateral Labour Agreement with Kingdom of Saudi Arabia after Esther Nabumati is found dead on Saudi streets

The government of the republic of Uganda has suspended the Bilateral Labour Agreement with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The suspension of the Bilateral Labour Agreement comes after the body of a Ugandan girl was found on the streets of Saudi Arabia lately.

This girl has been identified as Esther Nabumati and as a result of her death, there are distress calls asking whoever has Knowledge about her and where she comes from to have them notified.

The Ugandan Government suspends the agreement with immediate effect.

In a letter dated December 23, 2022, all recruitment agencies and pre-departure orientation and training institutions, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development Aggrey Kibenge says the Bilateral Agreement with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is due to expire today December 27, 2022.

“And this, therefore, is to inform the public that clearance and deployment of migrant workers, approval of job orders and training of migrant workers under this agreement are suspended with immediate effect.

“This is therefore to inform you that clearance and deployment of migrant workers, approval of job orders and training of migrant workers under this agreement are suspended with immediate effect,” Kibenge wrote.

However, this does not affect migrant workers whose travel had been cleared by the Ministry prior to this date and are in possession of signed contracts, travel tickets and visas.
