MPs’ exchange blows as Jacob Oulanyah swears in as speaker of 11th parliament

Outgoing deputy speaker of the 10th Parliament and Omoro county Member of Parliament (MP) Jacob Oulanyah has emerged as the winner of the just concluded speakership election that took place today Monday, May 24, 2021, at Parliament.

Oulanyah won to be the speaker of the 11th Parliament after garnering 310 votes defeating his close competitor also a former speaker and Kamuli district Woman MP Alitwala Rebecca Kadaga who has only got 197 votes.

Kadaga had to stand ad independent after being dumped by NRM’s Central Executive Committee (CEC).

Oulanya’s victory is partly attributed to the decision made by National Resistance Movement (NRM) top organ CEC after endorsing him as party flag bearer.

In the same race was FDS’s Ibrahim Ssemuju Nganda garnered only 15 votes followed by Bukoto North MP Richard Sebamala who has lost with no vote.

Jacob has also sworn in as the speaker of the 11th parliament for the next five years.

However, the parliament turned a boxing ring after Special Forces Command (SFC) entered the august house.

The fighting started when the had just announced Oulanya as next speaker.

The situation only had to calm down after President Yoweri Kaguta  Museveni ordered SFC to exit the august house.
