Ex Makerere University don Prof James Ntozi breathes his last

The Makerere University is with great sorrow saddened by the passing on of their former decorated member and Professor of Population Studies Prof. James Patrick Manyenye Ntozi.

He passed on today at Mulago Hospital, Kampala.

Professor Ntozi joined MUASA Fraternity in 1971 as a Teaching Assistant and was granted full Professorship in 1992. He gave his inaugural lecture three years later on HIV/AIDS in 1995. Giving an inaugural lecture three years after promotion to full professorship was a rare achievement then that only academicians of Professor Ntozi quality could do at the time.

Professor Ntozi gave all to Makerere University as a great mentor, a Head of Department, a Dean, Director Institute of Statistics and Applied Economics and a celebrated member of senate. He also served on many university boards and strategic committees.

It should also be remembered that Prof. Ntozi also defended the creation of Departments of Statistics and Population Studies during his 30 year service as a Senator.

In his last days at the university he advocated for university retirees benefits and pensions as the Chairperson of Makerere University Pensioners Association (MUPA).

More specifically Professor Ntozi founded the Department of Population Studies and advocated for the advancement of demographic and population studies disciplines at Makerere University. He mobilised resources and donations for the Department from many organisations including the World Bank, UNFPA, UNDP and Rockefeller Foundation.

On the side of MUASA and the welfare of the Fraternity, Prof. Ntozi should remembered for his deep love for Makerere University. Despite all job offers of international scale, he declined them all in favor of Mak.

“To us, Professor Ntozi loved our progress at Makerere University, his country and evolution of academic disciplines” Kamunyu Muhwezi added.

Professor Ntozi is survived with a window Mrs Dr. Ida Ntozi with whom they have children.

“We thank God for Dr. Ida who took good care of this great man during his service to Mak and this nation” part of Kamunyu’s statement reads.
