Uganda’s president Yoweri Kaguta Museveni Tibuhaburwa through his Vice Jesca Alupo extended Mubende, Kasanda Ebola lockdown extended for three weeks.
Since the outbreak was declared on September 20, 2022, the virus has claimed the lives of 55 people but its spread was being curbed.
However, Ebola has since spread across Uganda and reached the capital Kampala, though health authorities said this week that case numbers were falling.
Des[ite the fact that there are no new reported cases, on Saturday, Museveni ordered that the districts of Mubende and Kassanda should keep in lockdown for more 21 days describing the situation as “still fragile.”
“If we open now and a case appears, we will have destroyed all the gains made in this war,” Museveni said in a national address read by his deputy, Jessica Alupo.
“I, therefore, appeal for calm and understanding. Our health workers will continue to do all it takes to save lives and bring the epidemic to an end.”
However, Mubende, Kassanda residents oppose the extension of Ebola lockdown.
“There’s no genuine reason to justify the extension of the lockdown in Mubende for 3 more weeks. It’s pure hypocrisy, selfishness and lack of empathy from the powers that be,” – Mubende resident.
“Just tell me why you guys are putting Mubende people on lockdown,” Residents.
